Russia’s War on Water: Help Document Environmental Destruction in Ukraine
When Russia attacks Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, it’s not just about darkness – it’s about destroying the capacity to document what war does to water. We’re raising €8,500 for a generator to keep critical water monitoring running in Eastern Ukraine.
A specialized laboratory of the Siverskyi Donets Basin Water Resources Authority monitors water quality in the Siverskyi Donets River – the main water source for millions of people in the Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Luhansk regions. Every month, the laboratory conducts around 4,000 analyses, tracking pollutants, heavy metals, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals. This ISO-accredited data protects public health, supports environmental management, and provides an evidence base for post-war accountability.
Since 2019, we’ve partnered with this team through Austausch’s office in Sloviansk – Civil Society Center Drukarnia – implementing environmental monitoring programs across Donetsk region.
Now, the situation has become untenable. Sloviansk is a frontline city within range of Russia’s full arsenal – from artillery to glide bombs – and under constant threat. The laboratory team is relocating to Poltava – but systematic attacks on Ukraine’s power grid mean frequent blackouts. Without stable electricity, their equipment cannot function. Water monitoring stops. Evidence of environmental damage goes undocumented.
This laboratory doesn’t just monitor water quality – it documents how Russian aggression is destroying Ukraine’s environment. That documentation matters, now and for the future.
