Memory Culture in Times of War: Challenges and Chances of Holocaust Remembrance in Germany, Poland and Ukraine

In our project, “Remembrance in Dialogue“, experts from Germany, Poland and Ukraine examined the impact of the war in Ukraine on remembrance practices of the Holocaust and Nazi crimes. The project’s conclusions are presented in the guide “Memory Culture in Times of War: Challenges and Chances of Holocaust Remembrance in Germany, Poland and Ukraine”. Our authors Alexandra Janus, Anatolii Podolskyi, Eva Grütgen, Alexandra Köhring, Stefanie Thalheim, and Paul Stricker analyze how the war in Ukraine and political shifts  in Europe have affected memory practices and the discourse on remembrance culture. They also present examples of successful contemporary remembrance practices. The guide is available in four languages: English, Polish, German, and Ukrainian.

The project “Remembrance in Dialogue” was organised by Austausch e.V., Insha Osvita, Fundacja Zapomniane and Urban Memory Foundation and funded by the EVZ Foundation and the Federal Foreign Office as part of the program YOUNG PEOPLE remember international.
