Monitoring Belarus October 2022
Natallia Dulina, a former Assistant Professor at Minsk State Linguistic University, was detained for the fourth time in a year. She was detained by at least six law enforcement officers in full gear. Unlike the previous times, now Dulina is charged with a criminal offense.
A criminal case was filed against Belarusian singer Meryem Herasimenka, who had been detained for performing a song in Ukrainian.
Volha Ramantsova was detained over being a member of local community chats in Telegram and messages she left a year ago. She was detained by eight law enforcement officers.
Dziyana Kishkarenka was sentenced to 3 years of restricted freedom over her participation in the March for the Liberation of Political Prisoners, which was held in the fall of 2020.
Darya Lychkouskaya was sentenced to a year and a half in prison over a TikTok video and participation in protests.
Anastasiya Savulyak was sentenced to a year and a half in jail for insulting the man calling himself the President of Belarus.
Kseniya Kotava was detained over an ACAB tattoo.
Human rights defender Nasta Loika was released after 30 days in jail. In addition, she is no longer a suspect in the Viasna Human Rights Center criminal case. However, Nasta was detained again on October 28 and arrested for another 15 days.
In October, almost all private schools in Belarus were shut down. All children were forced to enroll in public schools.
The number of political prisoners in Belarus continues to grow. In October the following women were recognized as political prisoners: Maryna Sankevich, Yana Pinchuk, Meryem Herasimenka, Natallia Dulina, Aksana Mankevich, Katsiaryna Bibilnikava, Liudmila Abrazouskaya, Volha Kavaliova, Anastasiya Savulyak, Zhanna Charniauskaya, Valeryia Charnamortsava, Darya Lychkouskaya, and Sniazhana Inanets.
As of today, 1,390 people are recognized as political prisoners, including 201 women. We remind you that this number only includes those who have been officially recognized as political prisoners. Not everyone convicted on political grounds is recognized as such – for a number of reasons. In reality, the number of those politically imprisoned is much higher.
In the case of the BelaPAN news agency, Iryna Zlobina and Iryna Leushyna were sentenced to 9 and 4 years of jail, respectively. BelaPAN is the oldest independent news agency in Belarus.
Journalist Sniazhana Inanets was detained along with her husband. She used to write for TUT.by before joining Onliner.
Political prisoner Alena Latushka was sentenced to 2.5 years of home confinement.
Meanwhile, the situation with family abuse in Belarus remains critical. Another example: in Baranavichy, a man killed his partner with a hammer. She had reported him to the police multiple times, but the police never took the issue seriously.
Political prisoner Yuliya Marchanka, musician of the IRDORATH band, was released. Another band member, Nadzeya Kalach, remains behind bars.
In October, former TUT.by journalists Volha Loika and Alena Talkachova, as well as political prisoner Inna Mozhchanka were added to the KGB’s “terrorist list”. In total, the list contains 928 names, of which 183 are Belarusians.
The court passed the verdict on the Autukhovich case. The defendants were sentenced to 2.5 to 20 years of imprisonment. Volha Mayorava was sentenced to 20 years in a medium-security prison, Halina Dzerbysh to 18 years, Liubou Razanovich to 15 years, Iryna Melkher to 17 years, and Iryna Harachkina to 6 years and 1 month.
The lawyer Yanina Yurhilevich was detained right before the trial in the Autukhovich case where she defended a person involved in the case.
Political prisoner Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk was charged with another criminal offense, this time for “malicious disobedience to the demands of the administration of a correctional institution”. Previously, Sharenda-Panasiuk was sentenced to two years in jail for “violence against police officers” and “insults” against them and the man who called himself the president. Later she was sentenced to another year on the same charges.
Darya Losik was detained. Her husband is political prisoner, blogger Ihar Losik. Their 4-year-old daughter Paulina was in the apartment with her during the detention. Darya Losik’s parents were able to take the girl to their place. She was detained on October 18, but there is still no official information about the charges.
Valeryia Charnamortsava, activist and researcher, was detained and arrested for 10 days. Criminal charges were brought up against her over the 2020 protests.
Nina Bahinskaya’s country house was put up for auction for her fine debts. In April, Bahinskaya was fined for walking with a white-red-white flag in downtown Minsk on Freedom Day. She refused to pay the fine.
