Transition Dialogue

Managing change democratically

With the project, we enable a participatory examination of the post-1989 transformation period and develop concepts for European political education. Our project aims to support democratic change in Germany, Central and Eastern Europe through a participatory examination of the post-1989 transformation period and to develop new concepts for European political education.

We are working on this together with our partners in Bulgaria, Croatia, Lithuania, Poland, and Ukraine. The impact of the transformation period on today’s democratic capacity is examined, and an open approach to the opportunities and challenges of this time is promoted. Through contacts with various organizations, educational institutions, and experts across Europe, we aim for a broad exchange of knowledge and experience. We create materials for political education and raise awareness for an international perspective. The project focuses on improving history education in schools and shaping public discourses. The existing historical narratives in the countries are identified, compared, and constructive methods are applied to convey them. At the same time, space is created for a new form of examination and discussion to better understand the respective discourses at the national and international levels.

The project runs from June 1, 2022, to October 31, 2024, and relies on a cooperative and participatory approach that enables a comprehensive and sustainable engagement with the transformation period and its impacts on society.

On the project website, publications and teaching materials can be found, as well as announcements and reports on events, podcasts, exhibitions, and more.
