The changes of the 1980s and 90s, associated with the collapse of the Soviet Union, occurred differently in different countries. At the same time, various assessments of this period are there. The aim of the German-Polish-Russian workshop "Times of Change" is to raise awareness of these differences and during one week elaborate on the Russia understanding of Glasnost, Perestroika and the "Dashing 90-ies". The participants shared their views and impressions in their blog.
Nonetheless, it was not all about the major historical events, but about the understanding of individual small accidents. With this purpose the participants divided in small groups and talked Moscow citizens about their memories of the transformations of the 80s and 90s. Some of the project participants were journalists, the rest were working at universities or research institutes. Due to this diversity and the benefit of working in small multinational groups, the conversations with eyewitnesses enabled the integration of Polish, German and Russian approaches the interpretation of this topic. The blog posts speak about these professional and personal crises, new benchmarks. They often depict the present day through which that past can be examined. This work did not start with small individual meetings, but with a gathering of the entire project team, including representatives of the Virtual Museum of the 90 "Museums der 90er" and the Moscow department of the writers’ association ‘PEN’.
"Times of change," originally were supposed to be held in the city where Lenin was born - Ulyanovsk. However, due to the political situation organizers had doubts about the success of the project in the Russian periphery. That is why it was initially decided to hold a workshop at Zakharov community center. The "Times of Change" was conducted jointly by DRA and MitOst e.V.; it was financed by the Stiftung Deutsch-Polnische Zusammenarbeit, Stiftung West-Östliche Begegnungen (WÖB).
