When Russia attacks Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, it’s not just about darkness \u2013 it’s about destroying the capacity to document what war does to water. We’re raising \u20ac8,500 for a generator to keep critical water monitoring running in Eastern Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A specialized laboratory of the Siverskyi Donets Basin Water Resources Authority monitors water quality in the Siverskyi Donets River \u2013 the main water source for millions of people in the Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Luhansk regions. Every month, the laboratory conducts around 4,000 analyses, tracking pollutants, heavy metals, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals. This ISO-accredited data protects public health, supports environmental management, and provides an evidence base for post-war accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2019, we’ve partnered with this team through Austausch\u2019s office in Sloviansk \u2013 Civil Society Center Drukarnia \u2013 implementing environmental monitoring programs across Donetsk region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, the situation has become untenable. Sloviansk is a frontline city within range of Russia’s full arsenal \u2013 from artillery to glide bombs \u2013 and under constant threat. The laboratory team is relocating to Poltava \u2013 but systematic attacks on Ukraine’s power grid mean frequent blackouts. Without stable electricity, their equipment cannot function. Water monitoring stops. Evidence of environmental damage goes undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This laboratory doesn’t just monitor water quality \u2013 it documents how Russian aggression is destroying Ukraine’s environment. That documentation matters, now and for the future.
